Job Description Summary:
Responsible for providing nursing care, administering medications, and documenting care in the patient's medical record for a designated group of patients under the direction of the RN.
Under the general supervision of the Director and Clinical Manager, responsible for providing nursing care on assigned shift utilizing the nursing process and age specific needs.
Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Performs specified patient care with a high degree of skill, minimal discomfort to the patient, and minimal supervision.
If IV Therapy covered in LPN school curriculum and competency demonstrated, may initiate peripheral IV access and administer IV flushes and IVPBs to patients according to hospital policy; administers medications and treatments, prepares for tests and surgery, and assists physicians with procedures and examinations according to hospital policy.
Must successfully complete a formal 40 hour intravenous therapy training competency program through Nurse Education after six months of employment with the hospital or provide 40 hour certificate from employment with previous hospital before being allowed to administer IV push medications.
Receives and transcribes the physician, FNP, PA orders as appropriate.
Contributes to the development, implementation, and continuing evaluation of the patient care plan.
Identifies, records, and reports any change in patient condition or adverse reaction to treatment and/or medication to the medical provider.
Documents care in patient’s record.
Responds to medical emergencies, initiates CPR or appropriate action, and notifies appropriate personnel.
Orders patient supplies and completes referrals for patients.
Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
Completion of a vocational school LPN program.
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in the state of Tennessee.
BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position.
Special certifications may be required at the department’s discretion.
EXPERIENCE:
Proficiency in pharmacology and documentation and the ability to demonstrate nursing skills according to current hospital and nursing policies and procedures as normally acquired through the successful completion of documentation class, pharmacology exam, and skills exam.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Skill and proficiency in the technical field of practical nursing as normally acquired through completion of a vocational school LPN program.
Basic computer skills preferred.
